About the program

The Data Science programme at Stellenbosch University is a four-year degree programme that will be offered in four faculties, namely the Faculties of Economic and Management Sciences, AgriSciences, Arts and Social Sciences, and Science.

With a degree in Data Science from Stellenbosch University, graduates can put their skills to use to solve real-world problems in fields as diverse as genetics, healthcare, e-commerce, finance, government or retail, to name but a few. The programme will offer a diverse student cohort the opportunity to gain knowledge of foundational modules in core disciplines such as statistics, computer science and mathematics, and they will also be exposed to new technologies and concepts in the field of data science. Together with this solid foundation, students will choose a focal area within a data-rich environment and this will mean that they obtain the necessary domain knowledge in their chosen field.

Opportunities

The fourth industrial revolution has a huge impact on science and technology by influencing it in extraordinary ways. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical learning, deep learning, big data – these are all concepts at the core of a discipline called Data Science. Work across nearly all domains is becoming more data driven, and this continued transformation of work requires a substantial cadre of talented graduates with highly developed data science skills and knowledge. A qualification in Data Science is therefore highly desirable and will lead to many job opportunities.

Although various faculties have introduced some undergraduate degree programmes with Data Science as a focal area over the last few years, Stellenbosch University (SU) has launched the new undergraduate degree programme in Data Science with a true multi‐disciplinary nature. The BDatSci programme has been on offer at Stellenbosch University since 2021. It is offered on campus, with contact sessions. This is not offered online nor remotely.

As a Mass Communication student, I had the opportunity to learn the best practices in media production for various media platforms. I loved working with sophisticated equipment such as high-end cameras, lighting, vision mixers, and the audio console in the TV studio. The experience gave me the confidence to work at both front and back camera in television production. It was at Abu Dhabi University that I discovered my true potential and transformed myself into someone always ready to accept challenges. My parents were my motivation to succeed; my friends gave me the necessary support; my teachers provided the tools. Set your goals and make a plan to achieve them!
